Escort De Pijp, Amsterdam's Appetite After Dark
De Pijp, seen from your hotel window.
South of the canal ring, across the Singelgracht, the city changes costume. De Pijp went up in the late 1800s to house the workers of a growing city, laid out in long, straight streets, and those streets now set one of the most varied tables in Amsterdam: Surinamese, Moroccan, Turkish, Vietnamese and Italian kitchens, natural wine bars and late cocktail rooms, all within a few blocks.
Seven companions are based in or around the neighbourhood, and they know which corner is loudest on a Saturday and which table is worth the wait.

The neighbourhood in a few landmarks
The spine of De Pijp is the Albert Cuypstraat, where the best known street market in the city trades by day and the terraces take over at dusk. A few blocks south, Sarphatipark offers a green square of calm around its monument and ponds. On Stadhouderskade the red brick former Heineken brewery marks the northern edge, and the Gerard Douplein gathers the evening crowd around its café tables. The Amstel runs along the eastern side, and the Noord/Zuid metro line stops right beneath the neighbourhood.

Where guests of De Pijp stay
The district prefers character to size. Design hotels and converted townhouses sit near Sarphatipark and along Stadhouderskade, aparthotels suit longer business trips, and the Amstel side has a handful of quieter riverside stays. A short ride south brings you to the RAI convention centre, whose business hotels are an easy trip for companions based here. Museumplein is a stroll to the west, so plenty of visitors to Oud-Zuid are in effect sleeping on the doorstep of De Pijp.

Arrival times from the dining quarter
For hotels within De Pijp, plan on twenty to thirty minutes after confirmation. The RAI area and the far side of the Amstel add a few minutes, and so does the Saturday crush on Ferdinand Bolstraat when every terrace is full. Because the streets run in a neat grid, finding the right door is rarely the hard part. Tell us the street and house number and the chat confirms a realistic estimate before she sets out.

How the evening goes in De Pijp
Evenings here are built around a long dinner. Begin with an aperitif near Sarphatipark, choose a table where the open kitchen is the show, and let the conversation run as long as the bottle does. The hotel is only minutes away afterwards, which keeps the rest of the night uncomplicated.
For that kind of table, Luna brings bold modern glamour and a genuine interest in wine and theatre, Molly will happily steer the night toward craft cocktails and good house music, and Rosa, earthy and easygoing, feels at home among galleries and record shops. The complete De Pijp selection is listed below.

Getting to De Pijp
The north-south metro redrew this neighbourhood's map. Station De Pijp, under the Ferdinand Bolstraat, is less than ten minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, and Europaplein serves the southern edge near the RAI. From Schiphol the easy way in is a train to Amsterdam Zuid and then two stops north on the metro, around thirty minutes door to door, and a taxi takes about the same outside rush hour.
Above ground, trams still work the Ferdinand Bolstraat as well as the Van Woustraat, and the Stadhouderskade on the northern edge is where most taxis pull in. Parking inside the grid is scarce and the streets are one-way, so an arrival on the Ceintuurbaan or at a corner of the Sarphatipark is often quicker than a door-to-door drop.

Landmarks and a practical word
The Albert Cuypmarkt trades Monday to Saturday and has done so for more than a century. Sarphatipark, with its fountain and monument to the doctor and city planner Samuel Sarphati, gives the district a green centre, and the red-brick former brewery on the Stadhouderskade is still the landmark visitors photograph first. On the eastern edge the Amstel slides past, lined with houseboats and old warehouses.
De Pijp eats late and talks loudly until about eleven, then quietens quickly on weeknights. Hotel entrances here are often a street door squeezed between two cafés and easy to miss after dark, so a note about the café next door or the colour of the canopy helps her find you without a second phone call.

09 / Asked about De Pijp
De Pijp, answered
How quickly can a companion get to a hotel in De Pijp?
Most arrivals land twenty to thirty minutes after you confirm. Seven companions have their home base in or near the neighbourhood, and the metro and tram lines through the district keep the journey short even on busy evenings.
Could we eat in De Pijp first and head to the hotel afterwards?
That is the favourite way to spend an evening here. Give us the restaurant and the reservation hour, and she will be at the table when you arrive. Kitchens in the district often run later than in the old centre, so a relaxed start works well.
Is my hotel near the RAI part of De Pijp?
The RAI sits just south of the neighbourhood, between De Pijp and Zuidas. Send the name or street and we confirm the area and the arrival time; the starting rate stays €180 per hour either way.
Is the Albert Cuypmarkt open in the evening?
No, the stalls pack away in the late afternoon. By evening the street belongs to its restaurants and bars, which is when most companions and their guests pass through.
What should I tell you about the entrance?
The house number, the floor, and anything that makes the door stand out, since many entrances here share a facade with a café or shop. That one line saves her from ringing the wrong bell.
