Escort Zuidas, the Glass Towers After the Meetings End

Zuidas, seen from your hotel window.

Our name belongs to the oldest quarter of Amsterdam. Zuidas is the newest. A few kilometres south of the canals, gathered around Amsterdam Zuid station and the A10 ring road, it is the financial and legal district of the city, a skyline of glass towers, law firms, bank headquarters and a university campus, where office windows stay lit long after the old quarter's neon has flickered into life.

Visitors here are usually in town for work: a closing, a board meeting, a congress at the RAI. When the last meeting ends, the evening is yours.

The district between the meetings

Zuidas is more interesting than its business cards suggest. Public art stands between the towers, the Gustav Mahlerplein gathers cafés and lunch crowds beside the station, and the Beatrixpark offers shaded paths and a pond a few steps from the office blocks. At the western end, students and researchers stream in and out of the Vrije Universiteit and its hospital, and the Amsterdamse Bos, the great woodland of the city, lies a short drive away for anyone who needs air before dinner.

Just east of the district, the RAI convention centre hosts trade fairs and international congresses throughout the year, and the Olympic Stadium, built for the Games the city held nearly a century ago, stands a short walk north toward Oud-Zuid.

Hotels in and around Zuidas

Hotels here are built for the working traveller: tall, efficient and close to the station, with executive floors, late bars and meeting rooms. A second cluster surrounds the RAI along the Europaboulevard, busy whenever a congress is in town. Extended stay apartments serve consultants on longer assignments, and a few more characterful addresses sit just north, where the Beethovenstraat drifts into Oud-Zuid. In congress weeks rooms sell out across the south of the city, so some guests stay further away and commute in.

Business hotels are used to smartly dressed visitors crossing the lobby at any hour, which makes an evening arrival here entirely unremarkable. If your tower needs a key card for the lift, tell us whether you will wait for her by the reception desk.

From the canals to the towers

Seven companions live in Oud-Zuid and seven more in De Pijp, both next door, so Zuidas is one of the quicker districts to reach. Allow around twenty to thirty minutes from confirmation for hotels near station Zuid and the RAI. The A10 is the exception to every rule: in the weekday evening rush, or when a congress lets out, traffic stands still and the chat adds honest minutes to the estimate.

Planning around a late dinner with clients? Give us the hour the table is likely to end rather than the moment you hope to be free, and her arrival is timed to follow it.

An evening in Zuidas

A good Zuidas evening often starts high up, with a drink in a hotel bar above the ring road as the office windows go dark, then dinner at one of the polished restaurants between the towers and a short walk through the Beatrixpark before the lift back up. After a day of negotiating, the best company is someone who can talk about anything except work.

Samanta, elegant and composed, is fascinated by design hotels and learning languages, an easy conversation partner for a traveller between flights. Margo, refined and calm, loves contemporary art and piano, a welcome change of subject after a long day of figures. Violetta, tall and quietly mysterious, browses bookshops and has an unexpected love of stand-up comedy, and a good laugh is sometimes exactly what the day was missing.

Neighbouring areas

The museums and concert hall of Oud-Zuid are just to the north, the trains from station Zuid reach Schiphol in minutes, and colleagues staying east of the Amstel can look at Amsterdam Oost. The booking page lists what to send in your first message.
