Everyone notices the listening first. Bianka turns her hazel eyes on you, the hum of the hotel bar drops away like a stage going dark around a single spotlight, and a story you have told a hundred times suddenly sounds worth telling. It is an old-fashioned gift in a city built for distraction, and she hands it over without the slightest effort. Guests tend to leave having said more about themselves than they ever planned, and feeling rather better for it.
The second thing is the look. Light brown hair, long and sun-kissed at the ends, falls around a curvy 165 cm figure dressed in sultry boudoir elegance: black lace, a gloved wrist, a silhouette borrowed from a 1950s film still. At 23 she is younger than her taste suggests. Vintage fashion is a genuine passion, and she can tell real silk from a clever copy by touch alone, a skill sharpened on Monday mornings among the textile stalls of the Noordermarkt.
Warmth is the third, and it shows most clearly at the table. Italian cooking is her way of caring for people, one patient risotto at a time, and wine tasting is where her attentive side turns almost theatrical. A swirl, a pause, then cherries, leather and rain on warm stones, described slowly and followed by the question of what you taste. She actually waits for the answer. Ask how she would spend a rainy Sunday and the reply involves a slow sauce, an old record and a bottle opened an hour early so it can breathe.
She sets out from the Jordaan, where the bells of the Westerkerk count the hours over narrow canals, and from there it is a short crossing to the neon of De Wallen and the grand hotels along the water. A shared devotion to a good bottle makes Luna her natural counterpart, while Karolina plays the same neighbourhood in a cooler, sleeker key.
